Understanding Sprayed Seals and their Design

Intended as an advanced course in understanding sprayed seals and their design, this course will pull together design material currently found in several separate Austroads documents and present it in a logically flowing manner.

Description

Overview: 

Intended as an advanced course in understanding sprayed seals and their design, this course will work through the 2018 Austroads AGPT04K-18 Selection and Design of Sprayed Seals. The course commences with a basic-level introduction to functions of a pavement and functions of a pavement surfacing and desirable surface characteristics. It then introduces the surfacings materials of bitumen, polymer modified binders, and aggregate.  The many surfacings treatments available are introduced, and guidance provided on appropriate treatment selection.

The focus then commences on sprayed sealing, starting with fundament seal design theory, followed by an explanation of the Austroads design methods for primes and initial seals (primerseals), single/single, double/double, low volume roads, and heavy vehicle roads. Considerable time will be devoted to tutorials on each of these topics.  The differences for airport runway seal designs will also be introduced briefly.

Following the course, attendees will be given the option to complete an assignment to obtain a CPEE certificate of attainment in sprayed seal design.
