This course by live webinar is presented in two half day packages of two sessions each, with an optional Q&A workshop session. It will inform delegates on the basic principles & practices involved in design of bound flexible pavements for both heavy and light traffic. The program will closely follow the content & order of each section of the Austroads Guide to Pavement Technology – Part 2: Pavement Structural Design.
Delivered via Zoom
This course by live webinar is presented in two half day packages of two sessions each, with an optional Q&A workshop session. It will inform delegates on the basic principles & practices involved in design of bound flexible pavements for both heavy and light traffic. The program will closely follow the content & order of each section of the Austroads Guide to Pavement Technology – Part 2: Pavement Structural Design. This document is used as the principal reference and a copy will be provided to each delegate in advance for pre-reading.
The materials section will however cover more information than provided in the current Guide, as the selection of materials and determination of the elastic properties of materials is required for the mechanistic pavement design process. The elastic properties of materials is critical to producing suitable pavement design aimed at adequate structural and functional performance. This course is focused on pavement containing one or more bound layers and includes worked examples during the presentation and additional workshop exercises to be completed by each delegate outside of the presentation program.
Understanding and determining the subgrade strength, design traffic and elastic properties of pavement materials is fundamental to achieving appropriate structural thickness and layered composition to achieve high quality and long lasting bound flexible pavements. The Workshop exercises will cover key elements of subgrade evaluation, design traffic and use of series of charts for design of bound pavements for light traffic to reinforce the learnings. Answers to these exercises will be presented on the second day and emailed to each delegate after completion of the course.
Please Note: This course covers the design of new pavements or pavements requiring complete reconstruction. Pavement maintenance and rehabilitation, in situ pavement stabilisation, and choice of suitable treatments is covered by other CPEE courses referencing different Austroads Pavement Technology Guides.

Ross Paul, Principal, Ross Paul & Associates (RPA)
In his career with VicRoads Ross worked in several Regions and Project Teams in various positions responsible for planning, design, construction and maintenance of roads. In 1988 he was appointed Surfacing Engineer followed in 1993 by the role of Manager - Pavement Services being responsible for leading a team for undertaking pavement investigation, design and related research and development projects. From 1998 he was Technology Transfer Engineer responsible for implementation of new technologies and research outcomes, development and review of technical specifications, and guideline documents including provision of technical advice on most aspects of pavement technology. Since 2003 Ross as Principal Consulting Engineer of Ross Paul & Associates, undertakes a wide range of pavement technology and road surfacing related projects for various clients.
