This course by live webinar is presented in three half day packages of two sessions each, with time set aside for questions at the end of each section. It will inform delegates on the basic principles & practices involved in design of unbound and bound flexible pavements for both heavy and light traffic situations. The program closely follows the content & approximate order of each section of the Austroads Guide to Pavement Technology – Part 2: Pavement Structural Design. This document is used as the principal reference and an electronic copy will be provided to each delegate in advance for pre-reading.

The materials, Part A and the Construction & Maintenance sessions will cover more information than provided in the current Guide. The selection of materials choice of pavement type are critical to producing a suitable pavement design aimed at delivering adequate structural and functional performance. Understanding and determining all the design inputs and outputs to pavement design are fundamental to achieving appropriate design outcomes for high quality and long-lasting flexible pavements. This course includes worked examples during the presentation and additional workshop exercises. Answers to these exercises will be presented during the courses and answers emailed to each delegate on completion.

The workshop exercises will cover key elements of subgrade evaluation, design traffic use of the Austroads empirical pavement design charts and mechanistic design principles to determine pavement thickness and composition to reinforce the learnings.

Please Note: This course covers the design of new pavements or pavements requiring complete reconstruction. Pavement maintenance & rehabilitation, in situ pavement stabilisation, and choice of suitable treatments is covered by other CPEE courses referencing different Austroads Pavement Technology Guides.

All workshop exercises will be conducted during the day in course time. As time for workshop exercises will be limited,  it is important that you have the following handy and readily accessible during the course.

  • A scientific calculator or an electronic device with a spreadsheet program to undertaken statistical calculations to determine the mean and standard deviation.
  • A copy of the Austroads Guide AGPT 24 (Part 2) – Pavement Structural Design accessible in either hard copy or in pdf format for the duration of the course.
  • A sheet of graph paper on which to plot CBR test results.
  • An advance copy of the presentation notes in hard copy or pdf format.

Ross Paul, Principal, Ross Paul & Associates (RPA)

Over the first 18 years of his career with VicRoads, Ross worked in several Regions and Project Teams in various positions responsible for planning, design, construction and maintenance of roads. In 1988, he was appointed Surfacing Engineer where he had the responsibility for providing technical advice both internally and externally. In 1993, Ross was appointed Manager – Pavement Services and was responsible for leading a team of engineers and other technical staff for undertaking pavement investigation, design and related research and development projects. From 1998, he held the position of Technology Transfer Engineer responsible for implementation of new technologies and research outcomes, development and review of technical specifications, and guideline documents including provision of technical advice on most aspects of pavement technology. Since 2003, Ross as the Director and Principal Consulting Engineer of Ross Paul & Associates, has undertaken a wide range of pavement technology and road surfacing related projects for various clients
